HINESAD Commissioned as Lead Architect for CAMH and HFTC's Rebirth in Action Initiative

HINESAD has been commissioned as lead architect for Phase Two of Rebirth in Action: Telling the Story of Freedom—a multi-year initiative led by the Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy (HFTC) and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) in partnership with the City of Houston and artist Theaster Gates.

This next phase focuses on the preservation and return of more than 30,000 historic bricks removed from Freedmen’s Town, the construction of a new pavilion to house the bricks, and the rehabilitation of three historic homes within the district. The project advances the mission to honor, preserve, and amplify the cultural legacy of Freedmen’s Town—Houston’s oldest Black community—through thoughtful design and community-led restoration.

Supported by the Kinder Foundation, the Wagner Foundation, and a growing list of Preservation Champions, Phase Two is set to launch later this month.
