Visionary Citation Award – Jamaican Houses of Parliament

National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) | Vision Citation for Design Excellence
Fall 2018

At the 2018 NOMA Awards Gala in Chicago, Hines Architecture + Design received a Visionary Citation Award for its submission to the Jamaican Houses of Parliament International Design Competition. The award, given in the Design Vision category, recognized the conceptual strength and civic ambition of the proposal, which was also selected as a finalist by the international competition jury.

Led by Daimian Hines, the design envisioned a bold and unifying form situated within National Heroes Park in Kingston—Jamaica’s most symbolically important public landscape. The proposal centered on themes of nationhood, transparency, and participatory democracy, reinterpreting traditional parliamentary architecture through a contemporary, Afro-Caribbean lens. Circular and monumental, the structure was both grounded and open—representing the convergence of many voices into one people.

The recognition from NOMA celebrates the project not only as a design exercise, but as a meaningful exploration of post-colonial identity, civic space, and the role of architecture in shaping national memory and democratic experience.
