HINESAD Selected by City of Houston Mayor’s Office to Reimagine Historic Wesley AME Church

From Sacred Ground to Cultural Landmark

HINESAD was invited by the City of Houston’s Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs to develop a concept vision for the adaptive reuse of the historic Wesley AME Church, a landmark property newly acquired by the city.

The visioning effort supports the city’s initiative to transform the site into a vibrant cultural arts center—with a proposed program that includes a Gospel Museum, performing arts venue, and community meeting space. HINESAD’s concept honors the building’s sacred history while exploring its future as a space for creativity, cultural expression, and civic gathering.

This opportunity reflects Houston’s growing investment in preserving Black heritage sites through design and community-driven programming—and HINESAD’s continued commitment to designing with memory, mission, and meaning.
