Earthworks Begin at African American Memorial Site

Construction Commences on 15-Acre Cultural Landmark by HINESAD

Construction is now underway at the African American Memorial at Bates M. Allen Park in Kendleton, Texas, marking a major milestone in the realization of this historic and deeply symbolic project.

Initial site work—including infrastructure, rough grading, and foundational preparation—is actively progressing across the 15-acre memorial campus. Once completed, the site will include a monumental civic marker, Juneteenth Plaza, restored Black cemeteries, walking trails, and a reflection garden dedicated to those affected by slavery and the convict leasing system in Fort Bend County.

For HINESAD, the start of construction represents not only a physical transformation of the land but the beginning of a lasting civic contribution to cultural memory and design justice.
