The Architect’s Newspaper Highlights Juneteenth Groundbreaking of HINESAD’s African American Memorial

Honoring History Through Design

On June 19, 2023, The Architect’s Newspaper spotlighted the ceremonial groundbreaking of the African American Memorial at Bates M. Allen Park in Kendleton, Texas—a milestone event held in observance of Juneteenth, marking freedom and resilience in African American history.

The article underscores the memorial’s cultural significance and HINESAD’s role in shaping a space of remembrance, education, and community healing. Commissioned by Fort Bend County, the memorial honors the lives and legacies of African American residents, including those impacted by slavery, convict leasing, and systemic erasure.

As part of a 14-acre civic and cultural site, the project includes a monumental structure, Juneteenth Plaza, preserved cemeteries, and a future learning center. The groundbreaking ceremony brought together civic leaders, descendants, and community members to mark the beginning of a project rooted in justice, memory, and representation.
